Ask a PT: Knee Pain Part 2 - Knee Cap Pain

Are you experiencing knee cap pain?

We may be able to help. Dr. David Lee explains what causes knee cap pain (aka patellofemoral syndrome). A lot of times what happens is that the knee cap will rub against the femur (thigh) bone, which will over time wear down the cartilage on the knee cap and can cause you pain.

Common trends of knee cap pain could include:

1. Knee cap that tracks laterally/outwardly

2. Hip alignment and how we walk

We Can Help

Great news! Physical therapy can help and here are some techniques that we implement in the clinic to help relieve knee cap pain:

1. Train/strengthen the hip and rotator muscles

2. Quadriceps strengthening/quadriceps control

3. Mobilize the patella (knee cap)
