The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that each year, over 300 million older people are treated in an emergency room due to a fall. You may be at risk of falling if you have lower body weakness, Vitamin C deficiency, trouble walking, vision impairment, poor footwear, home hazards or while using certain medications. If you are experiencing one of the factors above or a combination of the above factors, follow the tips below to help decrease your chance of falling:
- Fall-proof your home: Install non-slip rugs and carpets, make sure you have proper lighting across your home, have handrails on both sides of your stairs, and tidy your home to lessen trip hazards.
- Get your eyes checked regularly! Poor eyesight will increase your risk of falling. Ensure your eyeglass or contact prescription is up to date.
- Participate in strength and balance training programs.
- Invest in a pair of non-skid shoes!
