NOW OFFERING LSVT BIG TREATMENTS

We are happy to announce that Doctor of Physical Therapy and Neurologic Clinical Specialist, Heather Popp, is now certified as an LSVT BIG Therapist!

LSVT BIG is a skilled Physical Therapy program for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and other neurological conditions to improve the Size and Quality of their movements. The treatment can be customized to the specific needs and goals of each patient, and it can be adapted or progressed as indicated. It is appropriate and has been researched for patients of all stages of Parkinson's Disease.

WHAT IS LSVT BIG?

People living with Parkinson's Disease often have smaller and slower movements due to a loss of dopamine cells in their brains that control normal motor movements. LSVT BIG is a skilled program that focuses on recalibrating the size of movements to ensure more normal movements for gross and find motor activities. The treatments include daily exercises, gait training and include functional tasks and homework. The treatments are individualized towards each patient to work on tasks that are meaningful and improtant to their daily lives and goals.

LSVT is based on the principle of neuroplasticity or the brain's ability to change and learn to improve its movements. Research has been conducted on the results of LSVT BIG and has reported significant progress in patients with Parkinson's disease in the following areas:

  • Improved Balance
  • Walking speed and quality
  • Speed and quality of Activities of Daily Living
  • Trunk Rotation

LSVT TREATMENT DETAILS

The foundation for LSVT BIG treatments directs patients to use BIG movements in order to rescale the size of their movements to a normal size. A course of LSVT treatment is conducted over sixteen hour-long sessions performed 4 days per week for four weeks. This intensive schedule is consistent with motor learning and neuroplasticity and drives long term changes in behavior and quality of movement.

LSVT treatments not only stimulate the motor system but they also improve the sensation and awareness of what normal movement fells like.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

LSVT physical therapy is covered by most insurances. To inquire whether you are eligible, call our office at 978-269-5194. You will need a Doctor's prescription for Physical Therapy. At your first visit, a Physical Therapy Evaluation will be performed to gather a history and test baseline balance, gait and motor function. Your Therapist will then make a recommendation based on your findings.
