Tibial Plateau Fracture

What do Kobe Bryant, J.J. Watt, and Aaron Rodgers have in common? You wouldn't be wrong if you were to say being the top players in their respective sports. But, they have more in common than you might think. They have all suffered the same serious injury while playing the games they love. Each of them has gone through fracturing their tibial plateau.

This injury is severe, to say the least, it is a serious injury of the bone structure that mainly involves supporting the knee and body weight, usually.  Just like the athletes mentioned, they had help along the way in their recovery to get back on the court or field better than before. Here at FYZICAL Oklahoma City, your physical therapists will be the best teammates you could ever ask for. Your Physical Therapist will come up with a custom-made game plan for you that will help you get back to optimal functioning.

What is a Tibial Plateau Fracture?

Before we can help treat your fracture, we both need to know what we are dealing with. A tibial plateau fracture is a break of the larger lower leg bone just below the knee that breaks into the knee joint. A tibial plateau fracture is without a question a high-damage, serious injury. The tibia plateau is a vital part of the knee joint that supports your body walk when you walk, run, and jump. If you fracture your tibial plateau, it is caused by a high-energy impact that affects the ligaments of the knee and other tissues/ structures.

The signs of a tibial plateau fracture are :

  • Swelling around the knee
  • Pain when weight is applied
  • Pale, cool foot
  • Limited range of motion

You might be thinking or asking, is it only top-tier athletes that can suffer this injury? The answer is no. Anyone can suffer a tibial plateau fracture, it can be younger people while they are skiing or in motocross accidents or people aged 50 and over that have suffered from falls or other accidents. But like we said before, your physical therapist at FYZICAL Oklahoma City is the teammate waiting to get you back in the game!

How is a Tibial Plateau Fracture Treated?

Your recovery largely depends on whether surgery is in your game plan or not. In most cases, surgery is not required.  Without surgery, a tibial plateau fracture takes up to about 3-4 months of recovery time to heal. After this healing period, physical therapy will most often continue after this. And your physical therapists at FYZICAL Oklahoma City are ready to get you back to your optimal functioning.

At FYZICAL Oklahoma City, we know that everyone’s path to recovery will be slightly different, but our goal is consistent with each patient: Treat you, the individual. The overall goal of recovering from a tibial plateau fracture is to regain full range of motion and be able to activate your leg muscles.

A general plan for a tibial plateau fracture will follow a similar path:

  • Reduce inflammation and begin the healing process
  • Your PT will focus on knee extension movements
  • Range of motion knee exercises and lower body stretches
  • Strengthen lower body; calve raises, leg raises, and squats
  • Stationary Bike
