Neck Pain That Won't Quit? We May Be Able To Help!

Neck pain can be the result of various causes, including poor posture, muscle strain, injury, arthritis, repeated motion, and other underlying health conditions. Your neck is an incredibly sensitive and complex part of your body, and because of this, neck pain can be debilitating. Neck pain can be chronic or acute, sharp or dull, but whatever the type and cause, all neck pain shares one clear detail in common: it needs to be addressed quickly.

If you don't see improvement in your pain after bettering your posture, gentle stretching/massaging, and alternating heat/ice, then physical therapy may be right for you. Targeted exercises that improve flexibility, strength, and range of motion are effective at treating neck pain. Typically, physical therapy for neck pain will incorporate manual therapy, which includes movement and trigger point therapy to alleviate tension in the neck, as well as targeted stretching and strengthening exercises. In addition, your physical therapist will review imaging results from your primary physician to pick correct interventions for your therapy. Physical therapists will commonly make ergonomic recommendations that can help you reduce neck pain by providing your neck with more targeted support when you drive, sit at your desk, and even when you sleep.

Outdoor Workout Ideas

Looking to mix up your workout routine? With the onset of the warmer weather, you can incorporate some outdoor workouts into your routine so you can soak up the sun while getting fit.

  • Stand-up Paddleboard: A great and fun outdoor exercise is stand-up paddleboarding. This exercise will help you build strength and work your entire body. Please note that this is a more advanced workout!
  • Sailing or Rowing Class: Join a sailing or rowing class for an exciting change of pace. This is a total body workout that will help strengthen your body and build endurance, agility, and flexibility.
  • Trail Running: Feeling adventurous? Try trail running! This is a great workout that’ll help you burn a lot of calories. Due to the textured and uneven trail, your body will have to work harder on each step.
  • Fitness Scavenger Hunt: Invite your friends to a fitness scavenger hunt! Map out your route and a workout to do at each landmark.

Benefits of Prehab

In physical therapy, prehabilitation or "prehab" is used as a rehab program that occurs before surgery or injury instead of after the event. This is based on the concept that patients with a higher functional capacity will be better equipped to tolerate the surgery or injury. Studies have shown that patients with a higher level of physical well-being prior to surgery have decreased complications following surgery and improved outcomes. These improved outcomes include a decreased length of stay in the hospital, improved tolerance to exercise, higher quality of life, faster return to work, and decreased levels of disability, illness, and death. For athletes, prehab can be used as a means of injury prevention.

Prehab is producing a more proactive approach to treatment and allowing patients to be more active in their care. Physical therapists are an important part of the process because they are able to help tailor each program to an individual's circumstance. Personal Wellness Tips

Try a New Relaxing Activity

Research relaxation and wellness programs through apps or in-person sessions, which may incorporate meditation, muscle relaxation, or breathing exercises. Schedule a consistent time for these activities each week, along with other healthy activities you enjoy, such as: listening to music, reading, spending time in nature, and engaging in low-stress hobbies.

Get a Good Night's Sleep

Stick to a sleep schedule to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Blue light from devices and screens can make it more difficult to fall asleep, so reduce blue-light exposure from your phone or computer before bedtime. Make sure your bedroom is not too hot or too cold and is as quiet as possible.
