Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo related to the vestibular system. It is estimated that BBPV affects up to 10% of the population over the age of 65 who are experience vertigo on a regular basis.

What causes BPPV?

BPPV is caused by an issue with the inner ear structures which control balance and orientation. Tiny crystals called otoconia become dislodged and move into the wrong parts of the inner ear which create the feeling of vertigo.

What are the signs of BPPV?

If you have BPPV, you may experience:

  • Short, intense episodes of dizziness when you move your head
  • Feeling like you are spinning or the room is spinning
  • Nausea
  • A sensation of being off balance

How is BPPV Treated?

BPPV is highly treatable. In fact, it is estimated that 80-90% of patients who receive treatment for BPPV experience a complete resolution of symptoms in one to two visits. Treatments typically consist of a series of head and body movements aimed at repositioning the crystals that are causing the vertigo. This simple procedure can be performed by one of our trained vestibular specialists. Relief from the symptoms of BPPV is often immediate!
